The Stateless Han Chinese of Guogan in Myanmar.

Read to know the meaning of this photo…
Hope more and more kind people will know this.
Firstly, I want to write this article as objectively as possible, to let you know the fact about Guogan and the people of this place.
Name: Guogan, whose more famous English name is Kokang, Chinese name is 果敢, meaning courageous and brave people.
Location: Guogan is located in the north Burma, close to Yunnan province of China.
Population: there are more than 100 thousands people living in this place(more than 2000 square kilometers), most of them are the Han Chinese, they speak Chinese, write Chinese, educated and learn from the Chinese culture in school and home.

Why did Guogan plant opium in recent history? Guogan(Kokang) is one part of the Golden Triangle where is famous for its opium-producing, here to have a very simple analysis of why Guogan plants opium, because they are segregated by their Burma military government and they are poor that the mountain areas are not suitable for planting the other plants, by the way, Guogan planted opium when the colonial domination of UK.
The Stateless Chinese, why?:
1, most of the people living in Guogan are from Han nationality, and their ancestors are from China, so, of course, they are Chinese, but they are not countrymen of China, because they come from Burma, not China.
2, these Han Chinese are born in Burma, grow up in Burma, but their so-called special ID cards given by the Burma military government show that they are not people of Burma.
So it is clear that Guogan(Kokang) are stateless and the people are country-less “Chinese”.

Guogan’s location between China and burma

But, Why?

Before I tell you the reasons, let us make it clear, that there are Chinese from all over the world, such as the Chinese from USA, China, Singapore, Thailand…, there once were many Chinese are stateless, such as the Chinese in Indonesia during the 1980s.
Why the people living in Guogan are stateless Han Chinese?
About 400 years ago, when that time, China is called as “Ming dynasty”, the wild Manchu invaded the land of China, and the Ming dynasty can not win the wars with the wild Manchu of Qing dynasty, many people of Ming were killed in the wars; many people of Ming came to the south followed their emperor, Guogan is one of the places, they swore to keep on fighting with Qing, never surrender…
With the time going, the Ming people and their descendant lived in Guogan for more than 300 years, they spoke and wrote Chinese, they lived in the Chinese culture, they are still Chinese…
Later, the UK took over Burma, when Burma became one independent country, the UK government took Guogan with Burma according to the so-called McMahon Line, which said that Guogan were one place of Burma, and the Chinese government accepted!!! The China government abandoned them.

Because the people living in Burma still keep speaking and educating Chinese, until to now, the Burma government does not admit they are the people of Burma…

In year 2009, the Burma military army occupied Guogan, the Han army of Guogan escaped into China and other places, during the war, China government said this is the inner affairs of Burma, abandoned them again.
They living in the land of Guogan, they speak and write Chinese, they learn and inherit Chinese culture, nobody knows maybe now they are in the wars, they are stateless Chinese, they want to come back to China, but that is a distant dream for them……
The Han Chinese army of Guogan, still keep fighting with the Burma military.

One little Guogan girl wrote her wish that in the future she want to be one soldier of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army, to protect their lands. But she does not know that China is not her country, she is a stateless Chinese girl…

20150119 Update: Kachin Independence Army again fought against the Burma government troops in the war, Kachin(克钦) is a another area something like Guogan, rich jade resource is one very important income for Kachin. Sometimes, the Myanmar military government breaks the wars with Kachin Independence Army for the jade resource.

(Year 2015 March 16)The relationships among China, Guogan and Myanmar:
Recently, one Myanmar fighter attacked Yunnan Province of China in the war with Guogan army, the Chinese government warned Burma government that Chinese military will do something to protect their national security. Hope Guogan issues will be solved in peace.

Stateless people are no fault of theirs. It happened from the demarcation of country borders, discrimination against certain groups etc. There are many countries with these problems including developed countries such as the USA and Canada. Your article on the Guogan people is interesting as it is the first time I have heard of them and I am sure not many are familiar with their problems. I have heard about the discrimination against the Rohingya people by the Burmese people and government, but not the Guogan. Do you know if the United Nation is doing something to help them?

Hi, greatstuff, thanks for your comment, absolutely I agree with you.
I am not sure if the UN is doing something to help them……
Maybe they are helpless, which is the cold fact……

That’s just part of the turth. Actually some of people in Guogan is the Chinese army that helped Burma fought Japanese in WWII. The reason that chinese government doesn’t help guogan is china need peace to grow the economy. and another is that china has some part of the land that arguing with india, too. if they do that to burma, it will pushes burma to india side. and if they really help Guogan (even everyone knows Guogan is chinese, but offically it’s Burma), this will have some bad affect on Taiwan problem, will gives some cases to talk about for some countries. And personally i think non country in asia that is really friend with china(except: pakistan and rusia. (north korea doesn’t count)) Especially southeast asia, for example: indonesia and vietnam. in 1998 the tragedy that happens in indonesia you probaly know it. seems like no one likes chinese in southeast asia(as a chinese i could feel it). sorry for the bad grammar

Guogan is beautiful place. It look like Scotland Without ocean wind.
Guogan has been fighting for hundreds of years. Of course , there are peaceful times in between. If I remember the longest peaceful time we have is 5 or 7 years. Then fight again and again. They are the Spartans of East. 2000 Guogan fighters fighting with a quarter million enemy.
Read the following paper you know what I mean.
They are 2000 modern Spartans of Guogan.…
